Unfamiliar Place - Luke Sawczak - Prose

"...despite those awful, awful hamburgers. That’s when I knew: if you can still love a person when their breath smells like hamburgers, they’re going to be your friend forever."
~ from "Hamburger Breath"

Jump to my Longer Works

In high school, I took a Writers' Craft class taught by Phil Vriend, and it was the best thing that happened to my creative work - he had a lot to teach about the philosophy of expression. Of course, it benefitted me most in my writing ability. I learned to write good poetry and short stories (a challenge if you love big sweeping storylines). Below are ten stories I chose from the many I wrote in that class; they go from half a page up to four pages. Enjoy!

I also write longer works; I always have one on the go, and complete one every now and then. I've been writing since I was seven, but I only started to take it seriously a couple years ago. I've finished and published one novel and I've almost finished the first draft of my second. I also tried writing a play and a couple of short - er, shorter long works. :) Here's a few you can check out.

Divinities on Amazon.com. This is my first actual novel, and even though it's not up to my current standard, I'm still pleased and even proud when I open it and read a page. It'd be really cool if you bought it :). For now, you can read a preview.

pdf   The Seventh Day. This is probably my favourite of my finished works. It's a 60-page account of the life of the Apostle Paul, written in a very poetic prose. It's fun to read, and also gives you what I think is a fascinating biblical story. I have a number of missionary relatives who enjoy it, too. :)

pdf   Invincible. A play in four acts which I wrote this for my Upper Level Drama class. It's a tragedy, but I did aim to include some comedy. I happen to like it, but I'd like to try a play again to improve on its faults.

pdf   Glimmering Cape Series. This is not an example of my best work! It's just for fun. I hope you laugh as much as I do when you read it. From the deranged mind of a seven-year-old with a penchant for writing.

In September 2008, I started writing my current project, titled "Rachel of the Fields". I tried to do everything as far from my comfort zone as possible -- it's a first-person story from a teenage girl's perspective, raised in a fairly normal home that suddenly plunges into dysfunction. Here's a short excerpt:

&

The other part of the Hailey sleepover time was that it did overlap a Sunday, which means that, pssst, I’m not a jerk, I went along with them to church. I’d heard all the stories more or less, secondhand. Like this guy is strong until he cuts his hair, like, I dunno, early death metal. Or some other guy is apparently uh really good, but he has an affair with someone’s else’s chick and sends the someone else to war. Iunno. Vietnam. He gets shot and this good guy takes the widow. I dunno what a good guy is if that’s a good guy.
The only story that really interested me was this girl what is named Mary finds herself pregnant apparently by no-one. I have a theory, she was too shy to tell the real story. Apparently everyone back then is really stupid because because they believe it when she says it was magic, or invisible, or whatever, I don’t even know how “that” works with a ghost. Her boyfriend on the other hand is not too bad a guy and he doesn’t dump her. She chooses to have the baby and this baby ends up being pretty respected by lots of people. In fact she herself is now, like, in statues and stuff. I admit that gave me a bit of hope. I can see why the Christians hesitate about abortion.
Also we got little mint candies in church, passed out by Hailey’s mom. Hailey told me to suck on it slowly because one was all we got for the whole service. Which was long. Like an hour. To hell.

A NOTE: it was warm and comfortable. The benches had cushions on them. I kinda liked it.

When writing it I try to be more colloquial, er, not as verbose, as you can see. I won't hesitate to say that I am really enjoying writing it.

As usual, if you've got anything to ask me about my writing,  contact me .
